Not “Applied Victorian.”

I you are a home owner in the mood to pinch a few historic ideas for your building project,  this old Victorian house might be a good place to start.  Victorian experts might call it “Italianate” like.  Someone else called the style “Folk Victorian.”  It was likely built somewhere between 1860 – 1910.  It has some really beautiful features that an architect might be able to move forward in time, and they probably aren’t what you think.  The cornice brackets, shutters, arched window at the gable, and bay window always make the Victorian style lover’s heart flutter.  An architect, on the other hand might see the tall lower level windows, the asymmetrical arrangement of the main volumes, the double entries onto the verandah.  These don’t fit into the re-modeler’s kit of “Applied Victorian.”
