And speaking of architectural forms becoming signs in themselves, this church probably started out as merely Catholic or Protestant.  When it took over the building the Orthodoxy was compelled to add its own identity by installing four eastern style domes on the tower.  No sign necessary.  Any architect could tell you that such is the power of an architectural symbol.

  1. Just to be sure that I was correct, I checked out the history of this building. The heavy stone structure was originally a Methodist Church, of Romanesque design, built in 1892. The domes were added when St George’s took over.
